Her Story

Born in 1941 in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, Kusum Gupta graduated from Ravishankar University, Raipur. Her love of sculpture began early — wood-carving, pottery, and bell-metal casting were part of her life long before formal recognition found her.

Her journey took her through the tribal communities of Bastar, where she learned metal casting techniques, and through the craft of wood carving, all before discovering her true medium. In 1987, when Bharat Bhawan in Bhopal opened its ceramic facilities, Kusum began working with clay — choosing cacti, mushrooms, wood, and sea shells as her subjects.

Within two years she had created a body of work exhibited across Bhopal's most prestigious venues. In 1989, during the Bombay Art Society's centenary celebrations, she was awarded the Dev Kumar Prize for outstanding sculpture. Her prize-winning piece, Adi Kusum, was exhibited at the Jehangir Art Gallery — and gave this body of work its name.
